Year in Review

It’s Been a Minute

2018 bowled me over, 2019 brought change, 2020 and 2021 were Pandemic Panoplies, and 2022 is in its final days. So much has happened and yet so much is also still the same.

The Big People remain the same crew, though Stella is indeed bigger at 6 years old. Our two massive tiny house cats have crossed over the Rainbow Bridge and last year on Mother’s Day we welcomed a new hilarious kitty to join the three people and the dog. We are still on James’s Grandpa’s property but had bought land just as the pandemic began and the plan is to move our park model tiny home there once we complete some drainage work and tree removal. James is working at a bike shop and I am teaching 3rd grade at a magical Waldorf School on a farm. We are finding it hard to make time for projects with our commute and the demands of our jobs, alas.

Buuuuuuut, the real excitement for us is that we have big plans for 2023 that are worth reviving the blog for. Not only the move of the tiny house but also that we have taken up sailing and are looking to expand our tiny house living to include part-time liveaboard… living as well. James and I spent the better part of a year talking this through, moving the conversation from vague schemes and dreams to more concrete goals… and, ultimately, ways to make this happen.

I also wanted to revive the blog because it has always helped me to record my adventures on this forum, partly to process but also because I really do stay more true to my values when I am sharing my doings and happenings with others. During the pandemic it became nearly impossible to live as close to zero waste as we had been doing and I noticed this year that those 2020-era pandemic restrictions had become habits, like ordering most everything online, not bringing my own bags or mugs, and not being able to shop bulk items without plastic. So while that’s not the most thrills-a-minute content for you all, it really helps me to stick to my decision to revert back to our minimalist, low-waste life if I am sharing things. And return to this we must if we are going to continue living our tiny life and afford to add a larger sailboat to the mix.

Yucky shame face as I toss an entire crisper drawer worth of produce into the compost. Commuting 40 minutes home after a day of teaching outside definitely pulled us to eat out more and we have the food waste to match it. I am ready to get back to the basics with some creative cooking… especially in community!
